In the 553rd issue of ProcessWire Weekly we'll check out the latest weekly update from Ryan, introduce a new third party module called Text Synthesis, and more. Read on!
Welcome to the latest issue of ProcessWire Weekly. In this week's issue we're going to kick things off by taking a quick look at the latest weekly update from Ryan, in which he has very interesting news to share — and not just about core development, but also an upcoming new website for the ProcessWire project.
In other news we've got a very interesting new third party module to check out: Text Synthesis, a module that integrates Google's Text2Speech API into your site. And, as always, we've also got a new site of the week: a ProcessWire powered blog by the Catholic District Education Centre in Freising, under the label of Das Denktoriat.
Thanks to all of our readers for being here with us again, and as always, any feedback is most welcome – please don't hesitate to drop us a line if there's anything in your mind you'd like to share with us. Enjoy our latest issue and have a great weekend!
Weekly update from Ryan
In his latest weekly update, Ryan talks about a few topics, which we'll summarize briefly here:
- Core development this week has been, again, focused on resolving reported bugs. Some of those have been around for a while, such as an issue where core Lister bookmarks used to cause infinite redirects under specific circumstances.
- We're really close to a new stable release — it could be out as soon as during upcoming holidays.
- There is a new release available for the Small Select Multiple Inputfield module. This version adds support for optgroups and "1 of 3 selected" type labels, and also contains a couple of small fixes.
- Last but not least, the work on a new website for ProcessWire itself has started. According to Ryan there are a couple of professional designers and long time ProcessWire users collaborating on the design. We're hoping to share more news soon.
That's all for our core updates section this week. For more details, be sure to check out the weekly update from Ryan. Thanks!
New module: Text Synthesis
Text Synthesis is a new third party ProcessWire module, created by Neue Rituale. This module converts text from your site to speech, which can both boost accessibility, as well as provide visitors with a different way to consume your content.
The module synthesis text fields by using Google Text2Speech API. This service requires an API key, which you can generate in Google Cloud Console. Synthesis jobs are placed in a queue and can then be processed via LazyCron or a real cron job. You can view the queue — as well as important details about each individual queue item — at the admin page (Process page) provided by the module.
Synthesized text fields can be configured by selecting them in the module's settings, or via something called SSML (Speech Synthesis Markup Language). For more details about available configuration options, be sure to check out the module's directory page or the README file for this module.
If you'd like to give this module a try, you can install it via the modules manager in the admin, clone or download the module via the ProcessTextSynthesis GitHub repository, or install it via Composer. If you have any questions, be sure to visit the Text Synthesis support forum thread.
Big thanks to Neue Rituale for creating this module and sharing it with us!
Site of the week: Das Denktoriat
Our latest site of the week is called Denktoriat — a blog provided by the Catholic District Education Centre in Freising, a large institution for adult education.
The main target demographic of the Denktoriat are the leaders in the field of education. It contains posts covering topics such as education and learning, thinking and acting, leadership and responsibility, faith and religion, and society and politics.
The website of Denktoriat was created by typneun Designagentur. The design of the site combines interesting visual elements and bold color scheme with splendid typography, resulting in a design that is both straightforward and enjoyable to use while still having plenty of character. Content of the site ranges from inspirational quotes to rather in-depth blog posts. In other words: there's something for everyone here.
As for behind the scenes details, the front-end of this site is custom-built, without the help of a full-blown front-end framework. There's plenty of framework-y stuff, though, hinting towards an in-house framework of sorts. There seem to be no familiar third party ProcessWire modules visible on this site, so not much else we can say.
Thanks to the folks at typneun Designagentur for sharing this project with us, and our congratulations to the Denktoriat for their new, ProcessWire powered website!
