The 619th issue of ProcessWire Weekly brings in all the latest news from the ProcessWire community. Modules, sites, and more. Read on!
Welcome to the latest issue of ProcessWire Weekly! In this issue we're going to kick things off by checking out the latest dev branch updates, some of which either add new features to the core, or improve our existing features in some manner.
In other news we're going to check out a module that is quite unique: Process2048. This third-party module makes the viral 2048 game playable directly in ProcessWire's admin. And, as always, we've also got a new site of the week to highlight: this week said site is Oxford Calling, an online publication publishing articles about innovations, events, and rising companies in the area of Oxfordshire, England.
Thanks to all of our readers for being here with us again, and as always, any feedback is most welcome – please don't hesitate to drop us a line if there's anything in your mind you'd like to share with us. Enjoy our latest issue and have a great weekend!
Latest core updates
While we don't have a weekly update from Ryan or a core version bump to report about this week, we do have again some new features in the dev branch. In addition to some minor fixes and updates with little functional importance, there are some that add to or extend the core's existing capabilities:
Page::get()now utilizes a newPageValues::getSpecial(Page $page, $key)method for getting values for properties with non-alphanumeric values. Some of the things handled by this method include keys likeHello {first_name},foo|bar|baz,field[], and_property.- The ProcessPageView core class, used internally when you view a page, now automatically detects if headers have already been sent, and avoids sending them again (which would otherwise result in a PHP warning.)
- InputfieldSelect and all descending Inputfields now support translated optgroup labels.
That's all for our core updates section this week. We'll be back with more updates next week, but keep on reading for other news and updates. Thanks!
New module: Process2048
Process2048 is, simply put, the 2048 game for the ProcessWire admin. It was released a while ago, January 1st, with a pretty telling introduction from the author, Maxim Semenov:
TL;DR: I made 2048 game for ProcessWire admin. Install it, ignore your inbox, get high scores.
And in case you're not familiar with 2048, here's a brief explanation, borrowed from the Wikipedia article:
2048 is a single-player sliding tile puzzle video game written by Italian web developer Gabriele Cirulli and published on GitHub.[2] The objective of the game is to slide numbered tiles on a grid to combine them to create a tile with the number 2048; however, one can continue to play the game after reaching the goal, creating tiles with larger numbers.
This module makes the game fully playable in the admin interface, and even comes with some fancy features, such as internal leaderboard, optional sound effects, configurable grid sizes, and a mobile-friendly user interface.
If you'd like to play a round of 2048 right in your site's admin interface (and who wouldn't), you can clone or download this module from the Process2048 GitHub repository, or install it via the built-in modules manager in the admin. If you need support or have feedback, head down to the Process2048 support forum thread.
Big thanks to Maxim Semenov for creating this super fun little distraction!
Site of the week: Oxford Calling
Our latest site of the week is that of Oxford Calling. This site is an online publication dedicated to showcasing the innovations, companies, and opportunities for investors offered by Oxfordshire, a county located at the South East England. This site was created by Enterprise Oxfordshire, with support from their partners.
Oxford Calling has been created by Enterprise Oxfordshire, with the support of key partners from across the area, with the aim of showcasing the incredible strength, depth and world-leading position taken by Oxfordshire's innovation ecosystem.
Developed by Castus, the Oxford Calling website features a really nice, modern layout, very nicely suited for an online publication dedicated to innovation, opportunities, and both business and science topics. The site is split into various categories, including AI, Cleantech & Energy, Culture, and Life Sciences — just to name a few. There's a lot of content here, as well as a filterable, categorized map of companies operating in the Oxfordshire area.
As for some behind the scenes details, the front-end of this site appears to be largely custom-built, using a BEM approach for CSS, and relatively few third-party JS deps. Meanwhile, when it comes to non-core ProcessWire modules, a couple that we could spot include the popular Pro modules Form Builder and ProCache.
Our congratulations to Oxfordshire Calling and Enterprise Oxfordshire for their brilliant, new ProcessWire powered website, and big thanks to Castus for sharing this project with us — fantastic work from everyone involved in this project!
